Line Splitter Tool

The Line Splitter tool is run by selecting the Split Line/Cable item from the Edit menu or from the Circuit Tools dialog.

  1. The first time the utility is run after opening a DEW session, the user is prompted to determine whether a final verification step will be used before implementing the split operation.

[Yes] - runs application with a final verification step preceding the split operation.

[No] - runs the split operation based on user input, but without final verification.

    Note:
Selected mode remains set for all split operations performed during the open DEW session (for any system opened).  However, the setting is not retained upon closing the DEW application.

  2. After verification setup has been defined (once per session), the Line Splitter Tool dialog opens, initially functional only to pick the target component [Pick Line/Cable Component] or adjust drawing zoom level [Up] / [Dn].  See initial (limited function) Line Splitter dialog.

  3. Once the target component has been selected, the splitter dialog returns with target information.   Also, both the selected part and its feeder component are highlighted in the drawing window.

The Line Splitter Tool dialog is shown here, after line has been picked.

The selected line is shown (in drawing window) marked with a central "X" and (brick) color highlighting.

The feeder component, shown for referencing the inserted split line length, is marked with a central rectangle and (pink) color highlighting.

Line Info - displays information on the line/cable type selected.

Location Information - displays reference X-Y coordinates for the selected part.

    User Options:

Line/Cable - window displays the total length of the selected part, before split.

Insert from Feeder - input defines the length for the inserted split, from feeder component to endpoint of inserted segment.  Note: Insert legnth must be less than the displayed Line/Cable (total) length.

[Split Line/Cable Operation] - proceeds with execution of split operation, which depends on setting for verification step.  After executing split, this command is inactive until a new pick is made.

[Pick Line/Cable Component] - launches the Pick...Component routine (i.e. mouse pointer-finger), allowing user to initiate or change component selection for the split operation.

Zoom Display - allows user to control zoom level [Up] / [Down] of drawing, while running the utility.  The displayed value defines the zoom factor used during operation.

User Scroll Options - allow user to scroll (or pan) drawing view, while running utility.  The Offset Pan Value defines the step size (per drawing unit length) that each (Left/Right/Up/Down) selection pans the drawing view.

[Exit] - exits the Line Splitter utility without further execution.

  4. Execution of the split operation depends on the final verification step setting.

    1. With Verify setting ON, the user is presented with the Split Info (i.e. verification) dialog:

The verification prompt summarizes the defined split operation and requires user confirmation before implementing the update.

[Yes] - confirms defined split operation and proceeds to execute.

[No] - cancels split operation and exits Line Splitter utility, leaving selected line or cable unchanged.

    2. With Verify setting OFF, the split operation is completed (per Line-Splitter dialog input) without the verification prompt.

  5. After executing the split operation, application returns to the Line Splitter dialog.  User may then choose another component to split or [Exit] the utility.
