DEW provides many applications for system simulation and analysis. These are grouped by field of discipline and in some cases allow for interdisciplinary dependencies, i.e. water flow from a pump station is dependent on electrical power to the pump. The general process for running an application in DEW is outlined here, with application-specific details addressed in the section covering the particular application.

Application Setup:
The first step in running an application is to launch Setup
for Analysis Execution from the Analysis
menu.
In the Analyses
Available window, Highlight the desired application with a single
left click, as "Load Estimation" is shown above.
Note: A double left-click will add it to the Analyses
Selected window, where "Power Flow" is the only application
showing.
Choose Edit Analysis Parameters to view or modify application-specific setup options, for the application highlighted in the Analyses Available window.
Choose Select
for Execution (or double left-click)
to add selected application from the Analyses
Available window to the Analyses
Selected window.
Note: If needed, use the Remove...
buttons to remove one (highlighted analysis) or to clear ALL items from
the Analyses Selected
window.
Set Global Execution Parameters (common for all applications) to desired settings:
Select On/Off status for execution progress, displayed in the Status area of main window
Select On/Off status for component-level messaging
Select On/Off status for beep notification of run completion
Select On/Off status for run diagnostics (pop-up messages giving status at key break points)
Input year (past, present, or future) for analysis occurrence
Open dialog to select specific circuits for analysis
Execute command to remove all current component messages from memory
Open dialog to select available time points for analysis, dependent upon database setup
Choose OK
to exit dialog, ready to run application(s) in the Selected Analyses window.
Setup for Display (of Output Variables):
The next step to complete before running an application is Setup
for Results Display, which can also be launched from the Analysis
menu. Here, users select the output variables they
would like displayed from the analyses being run.
Note: If the run command is executed before the analysis has
been setup for display, then the setup window will launch prior to execution.
Selecting an application
in the Applications
window produces a list of the available results for that application in
the Variables
window. Displayed above are results available from
the Power Flow analysis.
Note: The complete variable list available for each analysis
is described in the applicable guide for that application.
If you would like to limit the results display to only certain phases, then deselect any Phase check box that you do not want displayed. As above, only results for a variable's Phase A will be added to the display list.
Highlight (single left click) a variable of interest and choose Add to List (or double-left click variable) to have those results added in the Display List window. Shown above, we have added all phases of the "IMagA" variable and only Phase A of the "VMagKv" variable from the Power Flow application.
Continue adding
to the Display List
until you have chosen all of the applications/variables that you want
displayed from the
analyses selected for execution.
Note: Results can only be displayed for analyses that have
been selected for execution. If you try to display
a variable from an application that has not been run, then you will receive
a "No Results for ... (application)"
message in the status area of the main window when you attempt to display
that result.
Choose OK
to exit dialog, ready to display the results showing in the Display List
window.
Application Run:
After completing the setup procedures for execution and display, you
are ready to run analyses.
From the tool bar
in the main window, click on the Run
icon
, or select Run
Analysis from the Analysis
menu.
The analyses will
run, with messaging and user interactions dependent on application and
settings.
Displaying Application Results:
Once the application has run, you are ready to display results.
Note: Results are only displayed for
components that have their Results-Display
property setting ON.
Display properties can be viewed/edited from the
[Display
Position...] command button on the main
component properties dialog or from the Tool
bar, using the Schematic
Control Panel menu or the Circuit
Tools / [Control
Cmp Display Info] submenu.
From the tool bar
in the main window, click on the Display icon
The first result
from those selected for display will appear in the drawing window as shown
below, where a simple power flow analysis was run and the current (amperage)
values "IMagA" for all three phases are displayed.
Note: The variable name and phase
color legend are displayed in the status bar (bottom right).
Another single click
on the Display icon will update the view with results for the next variable
selected for display. As shown below, we display
Phase-A voltage (in kV) from our Power Flow analysis run.
Note: The variables display in the sequential order that
they occur in the Display List window of the Setup for Display dialog,
with the active display variable (i.e. "VMagKv") showing in
the status bar, along with the displayed phase ("A").
Continue to click the Display icon to show all of the analyses results selected for display. Before the Display command restarts the results sequence, the main window will cycle to the view without any results showing and without any variable information in the status bar.
The selected results for display remain effective throughout the DEW session for the active file, so you can quickly determine effects from changing components/configuration on a given application. However, you must execute the run command to incorporate any such change, before displaying updated results.
Once you have completed
your session, or are running another application, you will need to restart
with the Setup for Analysis Execution.
Plotting Application Results:
For some application results, the user may choose to view output from
the run graphically.
Generally, plotting
is initialized by selecting the Plot
icon
from Tool
Bar or the Setup
for Plotting item from Analysis
menu.
Either choice opens the DEW Plot Setup dialog, where user:
Selects Application and output Variables (with Phases as applicable) for plot from the available listings.
Chooses Plot Type (i.e. Time vs. Distance) and define any custom user settings (i.e. Plot Options or Parameters).
Picks the Reference Component for defined plotting routine, using Pick Cmp command button.
Executes the plotting routine by choosing Plot command button.
The output is then displayed in its own window, where user may view, print, export (as xml file) or modify available display settings. See Plot Output for more details and sample output.
