Flicker Analysis

Application Overview:

Flicker analysis calculates voltage dip percentages that result from switching on and off special loads in the system at a specified frequency.  The voltage dips are calculated for every component in the selected circuit and compared with the standard ANSI flicker curve for Irritation and Noticeable limits. If the calculated voltage dip falls within the identified criteria, a flicker condition exists.

See Flicker Analysis Setup for details on user input options for this application.  Available Output Variables for the application are described in the final section of this topic.

Application Run / Results:

See Running DEW Applications for general details on running an application, selecting and displaying output variables.

The Flicker Analysis application first establishes a baseline reference by calculating loads and voltages at each component with all of the selected Special Loads switched Off.  The values are then recalculated for the test case with selected Special Loads switched On.  Finally, the application compares the results from the two cases to calculate the resulting voltage dip at each component, compare it to standard limits, and determine if a flicker condition occurs there.  Where Flicker conditions occur, they are categorized by severity, as either Noticeable or Irritating.

The user can run the application interactively, generate the Flicker Analysis Report, or cycle the displayed network through the output variables selected from the Analysis / Setup for Results Display menu.

Interactive Run/Results:

Running the application in the interactive mode opens the Flicker Analysis Interactive Setup dialog.

Pick Loads to Start:

List box display that indicates (via highlighting) special loads to be switched on for flicker analysis.

View Special Load Data:

Command button displays Component Data for the selected Special Load.

Selecting the View Special Load Data command displays the Component Data for the selected Special Load (i.e. LN1).

Frequency:

Specifies the number of voltage dips occurring in the selected time interval.

Start Load:

Issues command to run Flicker Analysis during start-up conditions for loads selected (i.e. highlighted) in the "Pick Loads to Start" window.  In above dialog, Flicker Analysis would be run with LN1 start-up conditions.  (Single left-click on load items in the window toggles highlighting on/off.)

Quit:

Stops execution of Flicker Analysis and returns user to main drawing window.

View Component Results:

With option selected, execution (i.e. "Start Load" command) prompts user to pick the component where flicker is to be evaluated.  After selection (with mouse pointer finger), the Flicker Analysis Results at Component dialog is generated for the selected component:

Flicker Analysis Results at Component (i.e. LN3)

Component-level results from Flicker Analysis provides user with the component's local name, location, flicker status, setup parameters, and detailed results.  From this dialog, the user can choose either to pick another component for evaluation or to close component-level evaluation and proceed to the Flicker Analysis Results summary dialog.

When the View Component Results option is not selected, the interactive run proceeds directly to the Flicker Analysis Results summary dialog:

Flicker Analysis Results

Summary results from Flicker Analysis provide the user with an overview of the analysis.

Special Loads Switched ON (upper window) -  indicates the start-up loads being considered.

Components with Flickers (lower window) -  indicates components where flicker occurs from start-up loading.

Results - opens component-level results dialog (as previously described) for the highlighted component in the associated window.

Pan - brings the highlighted component in the associated dialog window to the center of the main drawing window.

Close and Return to Main Menu - closes results dialog and returns user to Flicker Analysis Interactive Setup dialog.

In addition to (or instead of) the Interactive Analysis run, other output formats available from Flicker Analysis are to generate the Flicker Analysis Report or to cycle the displayed network through the Available Output Variables (selected from the Analysis / Setup for Results Display menu).

Available Output Variables:

For general details on running an application, selecting and displaying output variables, see Running DEW Applications.  The output variables available for display from the Flicker Analysis application are described in the following table.

Variable

Description

FlFac

-

Flicker Factor (%)

FlInd

-

Flicker Indicator, where

  • Noticeable (N) flicker condition is indicated by a displayed result value of 1.0 for component in the drawing window

  • Irritating (I) flicker condition is indicated by a displayed result value of 2.0 for component in the drawing window
