DEW Environment

A New Analysis Paradigm from DEW:

  • Create one model, one time, maintaining real-time updates.
  • Use the model to simulate new designs, maintenance upgrades, and real-time event management.
  • Attach any data or calculation to the generic model, including new calculations with previous attachments.

DEW Feature Set:

Open Architecture
  • Database and layout of data in computer memory are defined
  • May be run against any relational database
  • Users may write their own applications
  • Users may attach new types of data to the circuit model
  • Users may use their custom terminology, symbols, and load models
Large System Compatibility:
  • Used to solve real-time reconfiguration for restoration problems involving more than 2000 sectionalizing devices
  • Used to solve power flow problems with over three million nodes
  • Uses a solution technique that does not involve matrices for maintaining a global view of topology
  • Extremely fast and well suited to distributed processing
  • Capability to solve hundreds of circuits in a matter of seconds allows it to be used as the calculation engine in operational centers
Cross-Functional Coordination:
  • Integrates data across the utility, such as relating load research data and kWHr measurements.
    • Load research statistics coupled with kWHr and large load kW/kVar measurements are used to predict circuit performance.
    • Provides basis for a Virtual SCADA system.
  • Allows service planners, system planners, protection engineers, and operations to share analysis applications and circuit models.
    • Service planners may perform advanced functions such as selecting the best phase for a new load
    • Planners may extract a portion of the operations model and provide analysis support to operations
Enhanced Functionality:
  • Handles tracing of loops
  • Strictly enforces connectivity
  • Model details that do not make sense in problem domain stand out
  • Documented data schema for both database and in-memory storage
(No encrypted, proprietary binary objects in database)
  • Data is always synchronized
  • Complete drawing environment that may be learned a few hours
Voice Activation:
  • Voice Activation allows user to interact with model using voice command interface.
  • User may use commands to locate target in drawing window, control zoom level, display application results, etc.
    • For example: issuing voice command "Go To York Station, Zoom In 5, Display Results, Next, Next"  results in panning of view to York substation, zooming view by factor of 5, and displaying set sequence of results.
Multi-Perspective Analytical Views
  • DEW can model systems geographically correct and accurately overlay into other software, i.e. Google Earth, with two-way correlation of views.
  • Multiple schematic views can be associated with a DEW geographical view.
  • Applicaton results can be viewed in either the geographical view or the schematic view.
  • Switch operations can be performed in either the geographical view or in the schematic view
  • Historical playback perspective enables incorporation of past sequence of data or events into model analyses.
  • Time Series Storage and a Sequence Analyzer can be used to run power, fluid, or gas flow analysis over a sequence of historical SCADA system snapshots, where calculated results are dumped to XML files for plotting against time or for use by other systems.
