At the 2017 IEEE PES General Meeting in Chicago, EDD’s Jason Bank was an invited speaker on the panel Advancing Distribution System Modelling Tools for PV Integration. His presentation, DEW-ISM Implementation at PEPCO: A Model and Data Driven Approach to Automating PV Interconnection Studies, covered results from an ongoing project at PEPCO to automate the analysis of PV interconnection studies. The project at PEPCO starts with the construction of an Integrated System Model of the entire distribution and secondary system. The primary model has 2.4M components and the secondary model has 3.9M components. The model is updated from GIS, hourly meter data and SCADA. A production version of the model is maintained in memory to support a multitude of engineering analysis functions that run in the DEW software at very fast speeds on a small processor. The DEW/ISM solution is integrated to the DER queue manager application to enable automatic analysis of DER interconnection requests.
